Clubs & Activities
Battle of the Books
Fourth and fifth grade students form teams to read 20 specific books during the school year. Teams meet during their lunch to discuss these books with an adult parent leader and then “battle” other teams in spring by answering questions about each book. Rhonda Francis leads the group.
Cool Science Investigations (CSI)
Cool Science Investigations (CSI) program is designed to enhance the positive experiences elementary students have with science learning. During our sessions, fourth and fifth grade students are invited to participate in Cool Science Investigations (CSI), a science club that meets before school. Each week, students engage in hands-on science investigations across a broad spectrum of scientific disciplines, from chemistry to physics, biology and astronomy. Abigail Campbell sponsors the group.
Math Wings
Fourth and fifth grade students are invited to participate in our Math Wings group. Math Wings is an opportunity for students to learn strategies for tackling challenging math problems. We practice before school in preparation for three regional and district competitions a year, which are held after school on Tuesdays. Math Wings is weekly from mid-September through the beginning of April. Our sponsor is Rebecca Forman.
Running Club
Briarwood’s Paws & Pavement Running Club is open to students in grades 2-5. Our running club practices several times in the fall leading up to the Jared Coones Pumpkin Run. We met Tuesdays after school and have several great staff and parent volunteers. The goal of our club is promote health and exercise while having fun and building community across grade levels at Briarwood. Principal Dr. Andy Caspermeyer leads the club.
Special Chorus
Special Chorus is an opportunity for fourth and fifth graders to rehearse and perform with a large group and to sing music that is a bit more challenging than that which is used in the general music classroom. Throughout the year, there are a variety of programs, performances, and tours that will involve the Special Chorus. This group gathers during school hours and permissions slips are handed out at the beginning of each semester. Special Chorus is under the direction of Jill Owens.
STUCO
As a student council, we will have students in grades 3-5 and teachers working together to establish a governing body, in order to:
- Share suggestions, concerns, views and ideas about the well-being of Briarwood Elementary.
- Inform others within our building of upcoming activities and events.
- Encourage leadership.
- Help Briarwood Elementary become a safe and exciting place to learn.
Abigail Campbell and Lisa Ciminieri are the STUCO sponsors.
